KEEPING THE LIGHT ON...…

South Africa has one of the largest HIV epidemics in the world, with about 7.7 million people currently
living with the virus.
HIV awareness events are vital as they increase knowledge of safe practices to prevent infection and
decrease infection rates and give a safe space for community members to ask questions.
On the 20th of May 2022, we attended a Candlelight event at Phiri hall with other Region D Stakeholders.
Sister Confidence Mokoena (Operations manager, Tladi Skills Centre): "Candlelight 2022 was not only
about shining a light on those who passed from HIV, but also those we have lost from COVID-19.
Although HIV was our core focus, community members should always remember that there are other
infections that exist. Our goal is to host these kind of events in order to raise awareness and educate the
community.”

The event happens every year but due to COVID-19, it hasn’t been hosted in the past two years. The
purpose of the event was to raise awareness on HIV/AIDS, to give support to those who are living with
these conditions and to light candles to commemorate those who have died from HIV/AIDS and COVID-19.
Some of the stakeholders who attended the event included: Wits Health Hubb, ANOVA, MoAfrika and
Senoane clinic - working together to provide health screening and advice not only for HIV and COVID, but
also for hypertension and diabetes throughout the day.
