May Measurement Month is a blood pressure screening awareness campaign which is recognized globally. It was launched in 2017 by International Society of Hypertension (ISH). The goal is to put emphasis on the importance of taking your blood pressure (BP) and to promote awareness of the risks associated with excessive blood pressure and hypertension.

As part of May Measurement Month, we partnered with Phila Sonke to explore solutions for health promotion and prevention of disease. We conducted blood pressure screenings and made referrals in the community of Dobsonville, Soweto for 2 weeks.

There are numerous aspects that contribute to improving an individual’s health. One aspect that poses a difficulty to many is determining how and where to obtain resources that assist the community in ameliorating their health. As a result of this gap, our health advocates face a significant challenge in assisting the community with their needs. Efforts made to address these issues in a specific community are referred to as "community-based interventions."

On a routine visit, one of our health advocates met a community member who had suffered from a stroke. After being discharged from the hospital, he was referred to the local clinic for physiotherapy and supply of a wheelchair.

However, the local clinic had no wheelchairs in stock, and the physiotherapists were unavailable. The patient was then referred to a community health centre.

Our team, working with partners in the community, were able to obtain a wheelchair and are in the process of locating a physiotherapist.

Being part of the Wits Health Hubb program has made a significant impact in my life, as a young person living with high blood pressure I had limited information about the illness but now I'm proud to say my knowledge has improved so does my health. I have absorbed vast knowledge, It took only one healthy conversation in a taxi and a life was impacted. It warmed my heart to hear from a community member thanking me, the impact is visible not only to me but my community as well. I can now lead a healthier lifestyle and maintain my blood pressure. It is easier to advocate for other people and help them be in control of their own health, as the phrase goes if you have good health you have everything.

As health Advocates , we are required to help the community to make better health choices and live a healthy lifestyle. We always take note that we are a rainbow nation and because of that we are able to comprehend the fact that people have different beliefs from ours individually and we should always respect peoples beliefs. By understanding and respecting peoples beliefs we then stand in a better position to assist or help them discover better solutions of health.

She says “growing up I only knew health as being a doctor or a nurse, I didn’t know there were other things”. She now realises the importance of doing regular health-checks “I’ve never done any health checks before and I now realise that high blood pressure is a silent killer, you never know whether you have it or not, so it is important for people to go for check-ups”. She believes the program has a positive impact on youth and the community, and while she’s a bit nervous to start her community health screening, she’s looking forward to applying the skills she’s learned so far.
